SAN JOSE, Calif.— September
26, 2005—InnoPath Software,
Inc. (www.innopath.com), the industry
leader in over-the-air (OTA) mobile
device management, today announced
that it has acquired the mobile device
management product line of Openwave
Systems Inc. for an undisclosed amount.
Openwave’s mobile device management
(MDM) technology will complement
InnoPath’s existing suite of
device management solutions to create
a consolidated MDM platform that
provides carriers and handset manufacturers
the most complete offering of mobile
device management tools available
today.
In addition InnoPath and Openwave
have entered into a global, multi-year
reseller agreement under which Openwave
will offer InnoPath’s mobile
device management solutions to its
customers.
The acquisition allows InnoPath to
significantly expand its value proposition
to wireless operators and handset manufacturers.
The combined Openwave and InnoPath
standards based mobile device management
technology will provide a more powerful,
flexible, extensible and interoperable
platform, allowing InnoPath to respond
quickly to requests for support of
MDM applications and services. The
combination will enable operators and
handset manufacturers to reduce risk,
accelerate time to market for new products
and services, increase customer satisfaction
and retention, lower operating costs,
and increase revenue — offering
a clear service differentiation.
InnoPath’s new MDM platform
will support applications such as firmware
over-the-air (FOTA), Configuration
Management, Diagnostics Management
and Feature Upgrade. DeltaUpgrade Plus™,
InnoPath’s patented, proven,
modular and flexible FOTA technology
performs updates of firmware faster
and more reliably than other methods,
and dramatically reduces the time it
takes to deploy firmware updates. Configuration
management enables the setting or provisioning
of a handset configuration parameters,
enabling trouble free activation of
data services thereby increasing service
adoption. Diagnostics Management allows
carriers to remotely monitor, diagnose
and repair handsets. When users report
problems, customer service can see
and resolve those problems remotely
and in real-time, improving service
quality and availability. Feature Upgrade
enhances OTA beyond its basic capabilities
by updating application features and
services, allowing carriers to brand
their products and offer end-user personalization.
Going forward, Feature
Upgrade will enable carriers to offer
customized and branded user interfaces
(UI), allowing subscribers to choose
and change the look and feel of their
mobile phones, and providing services
such as anti-virus and security downloads.
These, and additional strategic applications
will generate significant business
value, enabling wireless operators
to quickly identify and resolve customer
issues, improve the end-user experience,
and increase revenues.
Together, InnoPath and Openwave deliver
mobile device management solutions
to global wireless carriers such as
Cingular, China Unicom, NTT DoCoMo,
KDDI, Sprint PCS, T-Mobile, and TNZ
as well as leading handset manufacturers
such as LG, NEC, Sanyo, Sharp, Pantech & Curitel,
and Toshiba just to name a few. InnoPath
has commercial installations that service
over 60 million subscribers worldwide
with an additional 2.5 million handsets
being shipped every month.
“Openwave’s MDM platform
is a natural fit with our existing
portfolio of solutions,” said
InnoPath CEO John Fazio. “In
particular, their strength in controlling
settings, testing and interoperability
are welcome additions to our existing
expertise. The consolidation of these
two MDM product lines will help streamline
MDM offerings and speed interoperability
between handsets and platforms.”
“We are pleased to be announcing
this agreement with InnoPath” said
Martin Dunsby, senior vice president,
Global Services, Openwave. “This
relationship will combine the industry-leading
technology of InnoPath with Openwave’s
ability to provide solutions tailored
to the most demanding carrier environments.
This will enable Openwave to build
with our clients the capabilities necessary
to ensure all network users can access
high value features and services, improving
subscriber satisfaction and increasing
ARPU.”
Leading operators and handset manufacturers
have selected InnoPath’s OTA
technology as the preferred carrier
grade device management solution. InnoPath
is the first OTA device management
company to actively update handset
firmware in commercial deployments,
and has helped to bring the first commercialized
OTA-capable mobile phones to market.
Today, millions of handsets have been
updated in the hands of subscribers
with OTA device management technology
provided by InnoPath.
